The Mathematics Page

A page to structure the Mathematics topics we are working on, along with notes and resources. The primary textbook is the set of Cambridge Mathematics Extension 1 and Extension 2 books. These are pretty good, but we will also be working from some other books. I will document these as we go along:

  • Silvanus P. Thompson, Calculus Made Easy. Written in the early 1900s but still perfectly delightful and relevant.

A note: In both Physics and Mathematics, learning can proceed in ways which can make one feel like we are going down one particular branch of a huge tree, then walking back along that branch to go down another branch, because its all connected that way. As a current example, we started working on Silvanus P. Thompson's Calculus book, till we came to realise that for some of the proofs, we need to learn Combinatorics first. So, we are working on the Combinatorics chapter first, getting him acquainted, and getting myself re-acquainted with factorials, permutations, combinations, ways of counting, binomial coefficients, etc.

I like this way of working in Math, because it makes one much more aware of the intricate connections that exist between the topics. More on that later, but for now:

  1. Combinatorics
  2. Binomial expansion and Pascal's Triangle
